Human Menopausal Gonadotropin (hMG) FAQ
What are human menopausal gonadotropins (HMGs)?
Human menopausal gonadotropins (HMGs, or menotrophin) are a combination of FSH and LH in a 1 : 1 ratio that is extracted from urine obtained from postmenopausal women. HCG contains large quantities of LH with little FSH. It is secreted by the placenta and extracted from the urine of pregnant women.
What are human menotropins (HMG)?
HUMAN MENOPAUSAL GONADOTROPINS HMG, sometimes called menotropins, are available in ampules containing 75 IU of LH and 75 IU of FSH or as 150 IU of purified FSH. HMG acts to stimulate follicular development directly.
What are human Menopausal Gonadotrophins?
Gonadotrophins are injectable forms of these hormones. They directly stimulate your ovaries to produce and ripen eggs. The type of gonadotrophins that have been in use for the longest time contain both FSH and LH. These are called human menopausal gonadotrophins (hMG). Some drugs, called follitropins, now contain only purified FSH.
Are human menopausal gonadotropins effective in ovulation induction?
Urinary-derived human menopausal gonadotropins (hMGs) were the only gonadotropin preparations commercially availably for ovulation induction and COH in IVF for more than 30 years. Derived from postmenopausal women, these contain approximately equal amounts of FSH and LH activity.
How is gonadotropin hormone content determined?
As hMGs are different mixtures of FSH, LH and hCG, gonadotropin hormone content was determined by recalibrating the drugs against a standard recombinant gonadotropin (Gonal-F ® and Ovitrelle ® ), as previously described ( Riccetti et al., 2017a, 2019 ).
