What is Mania & how does it affect a person?
Mania is a drastic change in someone’s behavior that affects their ability to function in daily life over a certain period of time. Mania is a feature of several mental health diagnoses, such as bipolar disorder.
What is the difference between mania and hypomania?
Hypomania and mania are periods of over-active and high energy behaviour that can have a significant impact on your day-to-day life. Hypomania is a milder version of mania that typically lasts for a shorter period. This is usually a few days, although the length of time can vary. Mania is a more severe form.
What causes mania?
There is currently no known cause for mania, or bipolar I disorder. Causes may involve a combination of genetics, psychological, and social factors. Research has found a definite link between genetics and mania. In a study of twins, there was a 40% chance of one twin having mania if the other twin also had mania.
What are mania symptoms?
In some cases, mania symptoms can be severe, such as psychosis or hallucinations, and will require hospitalization. Symptoms of mania, or a manic episode, are behaviors that are an extreme change from a person’s usual behaviors, and last for one week or longer.
What is unipolar mania?
Unipolar mania is a disorder in which only excitement, excess activity or energy level and euphoric symptoms are seen. This is a rare condition. What’s the difference between mania and hypomania? Hypomania is a less severe form of mania.
What should I do if I have mania or hypomania?
Your care team should advise you not to make important decisions until you have recovered from mania or hypomania, and encourage you to stay in touch with your carer for support during an episode of mania. If you have mania or hypomania you should be offered one of these antipsychotics: risperidone.
