Exploring Ancestry Information and Genealogy
Ancestry Information FAQ
What is Ancestry com?
So, what exactly is Ancestry.com? Ancestry.com is the largest private online genealogy database. It allows users to create virtual family trees to trace their lineage, and get “hints” about who else could be their ancestors. It also contains historical records that can be connected to family members and used as genealogical evidence.
What does ancestry mean?
In wider usage, the terms ancestry and ancestors often indicate a general connection to people or things in the past. But in a genetic context they have a more specific meaning: your ancestors are the individuals from whom you are biologically descended and ancestry is information about them and their genetic relationship to you.
How does ancestry work?
It allows users to create virtual family trees to trace their lineage, and get “hints” about who else could be their ancestors. It also contains historical records that can be connected to family members and used as genealogical evidence. A paid subscription is required to access some of the features of Ancestry.
What is genealogical ancestry?
If one of them belonged to a particular group X, you might say that you have some “X” ancestry. You might even be able to claim ancestry in this way from more distant ancestors, based on historical or genealogical records. Thus genealogical ancestry is defined in terms of identifiable ancestors in your family tree or pedigree.
